One D-SLR, two autofocus systems

Welcome to a world of unrivalled flexibility. The D780 full-frame camera features a fast hybrid AF system specifically for Live View shooting and a fast, reliable autofocus system with phase detection for viewfinder photography. In Live View, the high-precision autofocus system provides 273 focusing points at sensor level as well as eye AF. When shooting with the viewfinder, you can rely on Nikon's high-performance autofocus system with 51 focusing areas and top-class focus tracking.

Autofocus for viewfinder photography

The autofocus system with phase detection and 51 measuring fields has a sensitivity of up to 3 EV. In the bright optical viewfinder, you can follow the action to be captured sharply and in real time. For moving subjects, the camera focuses at lightning speed, even in low light.

Always on the ball

In viewfinder photography, the 51-point autofocus system allows quick adjustment and fast switching between the advanced autofocus modes. The focus group control captures subjects quickly and isolates them from the background with impressive reliability.

Autofocus in Live View

When shooting in Live View, the hybrid AF system with 273 focusing points covers approx. 90% of the image section in both horizontal and vertical directions. Thanks to the tilting monitor, photos can be taken from almost any angle. It also enables the shutter release and autofocus operation via touch function.

Sharp in any light

The hybrid AF system with 273 focusing areas works with a sensitivity of up to ?4 EV, provided the lens has a lens speed of at least 1:2. For really dark subjects, you can activate "low light autofocus" and shoot with automatic exposure settings up to 6 EV.

The view in the centre

When shooting in Live View, the sophisticated hybrid AF system with eye AF can capture the eyes of portrait subjects and keep them in focus. Even in a crowd. You select the eye to focus on using the multi-function selector. The camera keeps the focus on this eye even if the person is constantly moving.

Capture the really important seconds

When shooting with the viewfinder, continuous shooting rates of up to 7 frames per second are available with autofocus and automatic exposure adjustment. And if you use "Silent Live View Shutter Release", you can even take up to 12 images per second. Shots in RAW format are also recorded in full resolution.

Ultra-fast continuous shooting

You want to show the movements in the jumps In Live View, you can take photos in Full HD resolution (2 MP) with frame rates of 120 frames per second. Or 4K/UHD photos (8 MP) with up to 30 frames/s.

Let your creativity run wild without limits. Thanks to the elaborate sealing against weather influences and the robust magnesium alloy housing, the D780 is equipped for any situation. The two memory card slots accept fast UHS-II SD memory cards to cope with the data volume of the camera's high continuous shooting rates and keep the buffer memory free. The deep grip and long battery life make all the difference, especially during longer sessions.

Customise

The most important settings can be quickly adjusted using touch operation or the control dials. When taking photos or filming with manual focusing, the electronic focusing aid offers a reliable check of the sharpness in the selected focus area.

Confirm

The optical viewfinder with a magnification factor of 0.70 offers a large field of view and 100 per cent field coverage. Images can be quickly checked on the large tilting LCD monitor with approx. 2.359 million pixels: double-tap on an image detail to display it in 100% view.

Views

With the camera's internal editing menu, you can immediately crop images horizontally and vertically. You can delete superfluous images from one or both memory cards simultaneously.

Fascinating views. Extreme action. The back-illuminated CMOS image sensor with 24.5 megapixels and the EXPEED 6 image processor ensure a wide dynamic range and great performance across the entire ISO range. With the 180,000 pixel RGB sensor inherited from the D850 and the advanced scene recognition system, incredible precision is achieved.

Visions translated into images

Take pictures in dramatic weather conditions or at night under the bright lights of the city. With the different functions for exposure metering and white balance, you can react quickly to changes in natural light or situations with high contrast.

Bright or dim light

With an ISO range of 100 to 51,200, expandable to an incredible 204,800 and down to ISO 50, instant adaptation to changing light conditions is possible. Rich colour tones in bright sunlight. Fine details and nuances at dusk.

Everything is possible

Exposure times from 1/8000 to 900 s offer maximum flexibility when selecting exposure times. Nikon flash units can be synchronised effortlessly with even the fastest shutter speeds for fantastic action shots. Of course, you can use slower shutter speeds for dramatic light trails and night shots.

You've never been freer to create

You can attach your favourite NIKKOR lenses with F bayonet directly to the D780. The camera is also compatible with all Nikon flash units. Advanced Wireless Lighting with radio control is fully supported, allowing you to use the versatile SB-5000 flash unit. With fast data transfer and wireless connectivity, images can be transferred with ease.

Remote shutter release

With the SnapBridge app, you can use a smart device as an external monitor and remote control.
Remote triggering is also possible with the optional WR-1 and WR-R10 wireless remote controls.

Fast connections

With the WT-7 wireless LAN adapter, you can connect a network cable to the camera and transfer images directly to an FTP server or computer at a speed of 866.7 Mbps.

Ready for smart devices

With the Nikon SnapBridge app, you can filter JPEGs, RAW images (NEF) and movies and transfer them to smart devices. In conjunction with the D780, you can filter by date and transfer a selection in batch mode.

The D780 creates high-resolution 4K/UHD footage at 30p/25p/24p and without cropping using the image sensor and its 6K resolution. You can use the camera to record full HD slow-motion films at 120p with audio. And you can record film material in DX format with frame rates of 50p/60p. The speed of the AF drive and the sensitivity of the focus tracking can be adjusted during filming. Four AF point controls are also available for videos.

The dynamic range of up to 12 light levels provides more flexibility for editing and grading. Shooting with N-Log at a high colour depth of 10 bits results in four times the information density compared to the standard colour depth of 8 bits.

The time required for colour grading during post-processing is eliminated. With the D780, you can record HLG HDR footage with high information density on an external video recorder and display it directly on a compatible TV or monitor.

You can record the timecode in drop-frame or non-drop-frame format and output it via 10-bit HDMI. The Atomos Open Protocol supports synchronising the start/stop of HDMI recordings via an external recorder. Or via the camera.

Time lapse in the camera

You can create spectacular 4K/UHD time-lapse films in the camera. Exposure compensation reduces the deviations in consecutive images to create smoother transitions. Silent interval shooting prevents mechanical shake and avoids annoying shutter noise. Exposure metering in low light can be extended to ?6 EV in the "low light autofocus" mode and the exposure time can be extended to up to 900 s.
