Description

Pentax SLR cameras have always stood for something very special in photography. Classics such as the M series or LX stood for simple handling and reliable technology on the one hand, and particularly compact and lightweight cameras on the other. No wonder that cameras from this era are still popular today. Reacting quickly to subjects that arise unexpectedly or realising your own visual language are prerequisites that make the difference in the picture. If you can't or don't want to make any concessions to yourself and your camera in terms of stability and quality, the PENTAX KP is the ultimate tool for photographers

.

And so the compact body of the PENTAX KP combines state-of-the-art technologies with the traditional design of an SLR camera. The silhouette with the prism viewfinder clearly shows its family affiliation. And so the camera combines a TTL glass prism, 24.3 MP image sensor with a unique top sensitivity in this class of ISO 819200 in a metal housing that is designed to be extremely resistant to environmental influences such as moisture from rain, snow, dust and freezing temperatures.

Housing design in traditional mirror reflex optics

The shape with the prism viewfinder is reminiscent of a traditional SLR camera, while the small dimensions suggest a camera without a mirror or prism. Hidden underneath is a completely newly developed inner workings, and the controls are tidy and distributed across just a few elements. Photographers have several options for customising these according to their own preferences.

High-sensitivity image sensor for high-resolution images

Independence and flexibility are important points for realising your own visual language. The latest generation of recording sensor pushes the boundaries.

Shake protection thanks to five-axis shake reduction

The PENTAX KP is characterised by SR II (Shake Reduction II), whose five-axis mechanism offers effective compensation for camera shake. You benefit from exposure reliability of up to five light values.

High-resolution image sensor with a super high sensitivity of ISO 819200

Unprecedented light sensitivity expands photographic possibilities and makes photography more independent and flexible.

The PENTAX KP couples a latest-generation CMOS image sensor with a PRIME IV processor and accelerator unit to extend the upper limit of the sensitivity range, enabling an unprecedented top sensitivity of ISO 819200. The camera thus delivers high-resolution images, with fine gradation tuning and faithful reproduction of texture and image depth.

APS-C CMOS sensor with an effective resolution of 24.32 megapixels and low-pass filter simulation for perfect images

The PENTAX KP has a CMOS image sensor of the latest generation with a resolution of approx. 24.32 effective megapixels. No AA (anti-aliasing) filter was used in the sensor design in order to optimise the imaging performance of the image sensor.

The result is sharp and finely detailed images with a vivid and realistic depth effect. By processing image data at 14 bits, images are produced in a true-to-life colour scheme and created with the DNG or PEF RAW format in maximum quality.

"Pixel Shift Resolution" system - cutting-edge technology to optimise imaging performance

With conventional sensor technology, not all RGB colour information is captured due to the design and must be interpolated after the image is taken. With Pixel Shift Resolution, Ricoh Imaging has developed a technology in which four images are exposed in series. The sensor is shifted up, down, left and right by one pixel at a time. This means that each pixel contains all the colour information. The camera uses this to calculate a single image, which is saved as a JPEG or RAW file. This technology means that all 24.32 megapixels are effective in the image, resulting in significantly higher sharpness and colour reproduction as well as less image noise.

For optimal use, we recommend using a tripod as image stabilisation does not work in this function. Shooting moving subjects is also not possible with this technology. However, the camera recognises movements in the image, removes the affected part of the image from the calculation and only uses a single exposure for this. During RAW development, the image can even be selected for this purpose.

Five-axis shake reduction - image stabilisation integrated into the housing

The PENTAX KP is equipped with an innovative sensor shift type SR II (Shake Reduction II), which compensates for camera shake for all lenses (including older models).

In addition to sensor rotation, horizontal and vertical shift, the PENTAX KP now also offers horizontal and vertical tilt to compensate for camera shake. In conjunction with new algorithms, this results in an exposure safety of up to five exposure levels.
In combination with the high sensitivity of the sensor and the large exposure latitude, this opens up completely new shooting possibilities, e.g. more safety when using long focal lengths and more flexibility in poor lighting conditions.

The PENTAX KP recognises camera panning while dragging. The automatic system controls all parameters accordingly to deliver perfect images even in this difficult shooting situation.

27-point autofocus system with 25 cross-type sensors

The PENTAX KP's advanced AF system not only captures the subject in sharp focus, but also focuses on moving subjects as it moves away from the starting point.
Of the 27 points, 25 cross-type sensors are positioned in the centre to ensure high-precision focusing for all types of subjects.

Flux sensors for fast lenses

Three centrally positioned sensors allow the autofocus to work with maximum focusing accuracy even with fast lenses of F2.8, while the remaining sensors are designed for a lens speed of F5.6.

Scene analysis AUTO - a new generation of automatic exposure

Supported by the PENTAX real-time scene analysis system, this automatic system optimises exposure settings and selects the best setting for each subject. When using the optical viewfinder, the system is supported by an algorithm that uses artificial intelligence to comprehensively analyse the subject. Automatic scene settings and scene programmes are even easier to use and implement. Sunsets, for example, are recognised and the necessary corrections and colour adjustments are made at the same time. Or the depth of field is automatically emphasised for macro shots. And a fast shutter speed is automatically selected for fast-moving subjects.

Perfect images thanks to various exposure functions and the original PENTAX Hyper Exposure System

In addition to the conventional functions such as Av (Aperture Priority) and Tv (Shutter Priority), the PENTAX KP offers additional exposure functions that give you all the options you need to compose your images. If required, the primarily important exposure parameters can be determined in the "Smart Functions" from aperture, time and ISO.

Autobracketing - exposure bracketing for the right image effect

With this new function, three shots are taken with one release. The exposure remains identical but the time and aperture vary to create different image impressions. Time-consuming manual exposure settings are no longer necessary and you can concentrate fully on your subject.

Electronically controlled shutter for super high-speed shots up to 1/24000 second

The shutter control of the PENTAX KP combines a reliable mechanical shutter (fastest shutter speed 1/6000 second) with an electronic shutter that offers an extremely fast shutter speed of 1/24000 second. In Live View mode or when using the mirror lock-up function, this results in almost noiseless and vibration-free shots. This function makes the PENTAX KP particularly "presentable" when the shooting situation requires low-noise discretion.

High-speed continuous shooting at up to 7 frames per second

With the PENTAX KP, you can shoot bursts of up to 7 frames per second. Alternatively, you can also select a burst of 3 shots per second to adjust the sequence according to the situation. So you'll never miss a moment again.

Compact and slim housing design

The development engineers have put a lot of effort into the housing design. It is intended to combine the requirements of a small, lightweight camera with modern features with the characteristics of a traditional SLR camera.
After all, compactness and mobility are important requirements for a camera. The PENTAX KP combines a range of advanced features in a particularly compact body to ensure carefree photography not only during everyday outings, but also when travelling and outdoor activities.

Extremely robust and sturdy magnesium alloy body

The housing of the PENTAX KP is made of a lightweight magnesium alloy with outstanding stability. Coupled with a corrosion-resistant metal chassis with high rigidity, the result is a robust and reliable housing construction with long durability and high reliability.

Dustproof and weatherproof enclosure construction

To prevent water and dust from entering the housing, the PENTAX KP has 67 seals. Control buttons, dials and the housing construction are thus protected against the ingress of moisture and dust. The lenses of the AW or WR series and the optionally available D-BG7 battery grip are also equipped with seals, which ensure reliable weather protection as a complete package.

Protection against moisture and dust is an important issue for photographers. The most exciting photos are often taken in poor weather conditions. Penetrating moisture or dust are often reasons why the camera needs to be cleaned or repaired, whereby the damage caused by moisture is often high and expensive to repair. It doesn't even have to be rain, even a stay in the tropics is very hard on cameras without special seals. But even the fine sand on beaches can cause the camera to fail.

Even if the PENTAX KP protects against the ingress of moisture and dust with 67 seals, this is not comprehensive protection against moisture. Unlike most cameras, the camera is weatherproof but not waterproof, making it your reliable companion in conditions that are not suitable for many other cameras.

Excellent cold resistance at -10 °C and therefore reliable operation even in freezing temperatures

The PENTAX KP remains a reliable companion even at low temperatures and in freezing conditions down to -10° C. Even under these extreme conditions, the camera electronics show that they run smoothly and stably.
Battery performance drops sharply at low temperatures, so we recommend keeping spare batteries close to your body in an inner pocket.

Exchangeable handles - suitable for every situation

Ergonomics is an important issue. The camera must not only be well equipped, it must also fit well in the hand. With the PENTAX KP, great importance is attached to the camera grip. The back of the camera has a special moulding for the thumb to ensure a balanced position. There are three different interchangeable grips included in the scope of delivery to suit the occasion and individual hand shape.

Large and bright glass prism viewfinder with 100% viewfinder image

For many photographers, a reflex camera with a folding mirror and prism viewfinder is the epitome of photography. The image is created in the mind and is formed in a bright and brilliant viewfinder. Here, only the eye and the subject count - no electronics to interfere and possibly obstruct an objective view. For photographers, this is pure and classic photography. And this is perfectly realised with a 100% viewfinder image and a 0.95x reproduction in the PENTAX KP. All exposure-relevant data and an electronic alignment aid are located under the viewfinder image. The camera is supplied with the standard focusing screen. Full, grid and coordinate focusing screens are optionally available.

3" flip-up monitor for unusual shooting perspectives

There are often perspectives where the live view function on the monitor can be helpful.
Angling the monitor is particularly necessary for unobserved shots and snapshots from the hip. To avoid unnecessarily enlarging the silhouette of the camera, a vertically folding 3" LCD monitor with a resolution of 921,000 dots has been installed. Thanks to air-gapless technology, which effectively prevents reflections and light scattering, it is designed to offer a wide viewing angle.
The display can be calibrated and the font colour and size can be changed. The brightness can be varied in 5 levels, and the night mode with red illumination ensures good legibility when shooting in the dark.

Full HD video function - when a video says more than 1,000 photos

There are always situations where moving images show more than a single image. Here you often need to react quickly. And with the switch, which can also be used to switch to Live View, the camera is immediately ready to go. The PENTAX KP records videos in Full HD (1,920 x 1,080, 60i/50i/30p/25p/24p, in H.264), with stereo sound via the built-in microphone or an optional external microphone.
The camera has a number of video functions, such as the "4K Interval Movie Mode", which creates a movie file from a series of 4K still images (3,840 x 2,160 pixels) from interval shots.

Custom image and various filter functions are also available for video recordings.

Wi-Fi transmission - share experiences instantly

The fresh memories and experiences can be shared with friends immediately. Thanks to the built-in Wi-Fi function, you can use the "Image Sync "* app to transfer images directly to a smartphone or tablet PC to be sent by e-mail or shared with friends on social networks.
In addition to sharing images immediately, the Image Sync application also serves as a remote control for the camera and allows you to set important shooting parameters.
