Description

The A7R III (ILCE-7RM3) has once again made significant gains in terms of image processing and efficiency. It combines a high-resolution, back-illuminated 42.4 megapixel Exmor R CMOS sensor with an impressive continuous shooting speed of up to ten frames per second with continuous focus tracking. The dynamic range of the camera is 15 f-stops. The sensor is extremely light-sensitive and compensates for image noise with effective noise suppression. It goes without saying that the camera can also record videos in top 4K video quality, given the other functions. All in all, the A7R III is an extremely versatile tool for photographers, videographers, multimedia creators and other creative professionals with high demands on reliability, flexibility and versatility.

The new A7R III from Sony is also equipped with a front-end LSI (Large Scale Integration) and a new BIONZ X processor, which increases the processing speed by 1.8 times compared to the A7R II. Thanks to the interplay of these powerful components, the camera offers a high continuous shooting speed, an extremely wide ISO range of 100 to 32,000 (expandable to ISO 50 to 102,400 for photos) and an enormous dynamic range of 15 f-stops at low ISO settings. The A7R III can therefore perform at its best in all settings and shooting situations.

The new full-frame model has no low-pass filter to achieve the highest possible resolution. The camera also supports image output in 14-bit RAW format, even for silent continuous shooting. Every photographer can rely on the 5-axis image stabiliser to ensure that nothing is blurred in view of the high resolution. The system compensates for 5.5 f-stops. No other image stabilisation system is better [iii]. The vibration-reducing shutter has also declared war on camera shake. It even works at ten frames per second. To make skin tones and colours appear even more natural, there have also been improvements in image processing.

High-performance AF and AF/AE tracking at ten frames/second

The innovative new full-frame mirrorless camera processes 76 JPEG/RAW images or 28 uncompressed RAW photos in continuous shooting mode at full resolution and automatic focus tracking in Hi+ mode with a UHS II compatible memory card. The ten images per second are possible with both silent electronic and mechanical shutter. This makes the camera even more flexible to use. The camera also allows continuous shooting at up to eight frames per second in Live View mode with minimal delay in the viewfinder or on the LCD display. Thanks to these high-speed options, even fast subjects are captured reliably and precisely.

For even more convenience, the most important camera functions are also available when serial images are written to the memory card. These include the Fn (function) button, the menu button, image playback and several menus and parameters such as image rating and other functions that make it easier to sort photos.

In addition, users can activate the anti-flicker function in shooting situations with fluorescent or artificial light. The A7R III can then automatically detect flicker at 100 and 120 Hz and select the shutter speed to minimise its effect on the images. This minimises possible exposure and colour errors at the top and bottom of the image that can occur at fast shutter speeds.

The revised autofocus of the A7R III comprises 399 phase detection points, which cover around 68 per cent of the image area in both horizontal and vertical directions. The camera also has 425 contrast autofocus points, 400 more than the A7R II. The autofocus is now twice as fast as on the A7R II, especially in low light. Subject tracking is also twice as precise. Eye autofocus, which focuses on the model's iris at the touch of a button, is now twice as effective and also available when the camera is used with
A mount lenses from Sony plus adapter.

More improvements: Autofocus is now also available in focus magnification mode. Photographers can now also enjoy phase-detect AF with A mount lenses. There is now an AF on button, multiple selection, a joystick for quickly moving focus points, a flexible touch focus function and much more.

High-quality 4K image quality for professional video recordings

The new A7R III is not only specialised in photos. It supports 4K video recording (3840 x 2160 pixels) across the entire width of the full-frame sensor. When filming in Super 35 mm format, the camera reads every single pixel without pixel binning and can therefore capture 5K data. This data is then used to create a first-class 4K video with exceptional depth and accuracy.

A new HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma) recording function supports an instant HDR workflow, allowing extremely realistic 4K HDR images to be reproduced on HDR televisions. S-Log 2 and S-Log 3 provide great flexibility for colour gradients. The camera can record up to 120 images per second in Full HD at up to 100 Mbps. This enables four to five times slow-motion recordings in Full HD with autofocus tracking.

Construction & design for professionals

The new camera has numerous features that professionals in particular will appreciate. These include two memory card slots, one of which supports SD memory cards of type UHS-II. Users can save their content in different ways, JPEG and RAW recordings or separate photos and videos. Relay recording is also possible. The battery life is also greatly improved as the new Z series batteries are used. The battery performance increases by around 2.2 times.

The A7R III is equipped with a brand new high-resolution Quad VGA OLED Tru-Finder with high luminosity and approx. 3,686,000 pixels. This guarantees lifelike detail reproduction. The Tru-Finder, which can also be found in the A9 camera, has a ZEISS T* coating. This reduces reflections. A fluorine coating protects the finder from dirt. The frame rate can be set to 60 or 120 frames per second. The LC display has also been revised and now offers a resolution of 1.44 million dots and WhiteMagic technology for better recognisability in bright daylight. Standard or High display quality settings are available for both the viewfinder and the display. High utilises the entire data volume read by the 42.4 megapixel sensor. This ensures a particularly fine-grained image in the viewfinder and display.

The new A7R III enables the convenient transfer of files to smartphones, tablets or computers via WiFi. There is also a sync port that allows external flash units and cables to be connected directly for convenient flash synchronisation. A SuperSpeed USB (USB 3.1 Gen1) USB Type-C port is also available and offers more flexibility in terms of power supply or connected accessories as well as faster image transfer when connected to a PC.

New Imaging Edge software suite and Pixel Shift multi-shot mode

A new feature of the A7R III is the Imaging Edge software, which massively expands the creative possibilities of photographers. Imaging Edge comprises three PC applications called Remote, Viewer and Edit, which can be downloaded free of charge and support remote Live View shooting from the PC and RAW development.

Also new to the A7R III is the Pixel Shift multi-shot mode, which uses the 5-axis optical image stabiliser to create impressively realistic composite images with extremely high resolution. In this mode, the camera precisely shifts the sensor in one-pixel increments to create four individual pixel-shifted images totalling 169.6 megapixels. These four images can be combined and processed into one image using the new Imaging Edge Software Suite. The end result is a photo with extremely high resolution and unprecedented colour accuracy and is ideal for photographing architecture, art or other subjects with lots of complex details and colours.
